18m Trailers reduce CO2 improve profitability claim
Following Fleet Transports feature on Ivecos 18m combination concept, a wide range of views have been expressed by the industry.
Potential benefits of moving to 18m trailers include possible reductions in CO2, and improved tonne/kilometre statistics once trailers can be fully loaded. Operators working on per package contracts will improve profitability, and there would be an initial competitive advantage over rail and sea-going Ro-Ro versus Lo-Lo.
However on the flip side longer trailers may increase costs for hauliers paid per load as payments will remain unchanged and if load size increases number of total loads will decrease. The scope of the trials is also questioned as subjective and sterile. In addition introduction of new size trailers will result in wastage of existing shorter trailer fleet, which has environmental impact. There is also a query whether the trailers can be accommodated by rail/sea transport.
Axscend, the trailer management solutions provider, welcomes all initiatives to drive down costs, reduce environmental impact and improve profitability for the freight industry. Initiatives such as satellite tracking of trailers can optimise existing fleet utilisation. Using trailer tracking operators gain control of trailer fleet information allowing managers to make the right operational decisions.
