DfT Longer Semi-trailers report feared buried
Hauliers hoping to use longer semi-trailers to improve fleet efficiency and reduce their carbon footprint, may have to wait longer, as the DfT admitted their long awaited report would be delayed until the spring. With an anticipated May election, there are fears that legislative changes and reforms from an incoming government could then effectively bury the report.
The DfT said that “Additional time was needed to ensure that those in the industries concerned were able to contribute their evidence and views to the researchers.”
Freight Transport Association spokesperson said “Its a shame, but we understand that there are views that need to be expressed. We just need some political boldness to get on with it. It’s the obvious thing to do and saves a lot of carbon.”
With Longer Heavier Vehicles (LHVs) already rejected, longer semi-trailers are widely hoped to be a possible alternative. Operators that used longer semi-trailers would be able to save carbon and reduce fleet fuel consumption.
In Northern Ireland Muldoon Transport Systems is already trialling a longer semi-trailer, saying “If it works here, it will certainly work anywhere.”
While options such as the long-awaited longer semi-trailer offer potential future solutions to improve haulage efficiency, it is already possible to optimise existing trailer utilisation with systems such as Axscend tracking. By installing a GPS tracking device for satellite tracking, operators can have a real-time view of trailer usage often achieving a 15% improvement in trailer utilisation and up to 8% reduction in required fleet size.
