14% road freight reduction for greenhouse pledge

Logistics

To meet the UK greenhouse gas emissions pledge of an 80% reduction in logistics carbon emissions radical changes in five key parameters are needed, says Heriot-Watt University Logistics Research Centre.

The figures include reducing empty running by 10% to 17%, reducing carbon content of fuels by 30% and reducing overall road freight by 14%. At the same time fuel efficiency must increase by 40%.

The FTA says that as the industry looks at its environmental challenges these figures provide a starting point. FTA modal councils will begin looking at how practical the assumptions would be.

Logistics firms looking to make positive improvements on their environmental impact can utilise Trailer Management technology to optimise their fleets. Axscend customers achieve efficiencies through visibility. Effective tracking of the trailer fleet using GPS tracking streamlines operations, for example reducing the number of trips needed for pick-up and drop-off and identifying opportunities for return loads.
