New policies unveiled for 80% carbon reduction target
1st June 2010
Longer semi-trailers and 'eco-driver' trainer courses are amongst policies being considered as part of the government's plans for the logistics sector as it considers how to meet the 80% carbon reduction target. In the Carbon Reduction Delivery Plan published by the DfT, freight and logistics is named as 'particularly challenging'. The DfT say that £300m in fuel costs could be saved by a 90% uptake in eco-driver training courses and is considering how to achieve this. The potential carbon reduction opportunities of increasing the length of semi-trailers by up to 2.05m are also being considered by a DfT study, carried out by Transport Research Laboratory and MDS Transmodal, the results of which will be published soon. A further consultation may follow.
Improving trailer fleet efficiencies by using tool such as Axscend trailer management help operators save costs and also help reduce carbon emissions. A combination of Satellite Tracking, access to a wide set of trailer data weight, odometer and roll-stability interventions enables operators to make most efficient utilisation of fleets, while online maintenance planning and control enables operators to ensure trailers are running optimally.
