Upper deck safety offers efficiencies

1st June 2010

A new double-deck trailer is being trialled which has new safety features built-in. Built by Montracon and developed by rental company Trailer Resource in conjunction with Palletforce, the primary aim of the prototype is to improve safety during loading and unloading. The new safety features include a ladder enabling operatives to reach the upper deck, non-slip surfaces, grab handles and mesh flooring on the upper deck to enable visual checks. Improving safety for trailer loading and checking will mean any issues can be more easily identified and simpler to rectify, which in turn offers efficiency improvements as delays and downtime will be less likely to occur.

Initiatives such as this one to enhance double-deck safety will also provide operational efficiencies. Axscend trailer management is another example of a system that improves safety and operational efficiencies simultaneously. As well as GPS Tracking, the Axscend TrailerMaster system includes online maintenance planning and control for careful scheduling of trailer services, trailer MOT's and other off-road activity. Operators using the system achieve high levels of VOSA compliance, while minimising the impact of off-road time on fleet operations.
